  Post 6 From the DMIS model, majority of South Koreans stand on defense stage, to which people perceive other cultures are threatening and inferior. It is fairly a Christian country, so strong ethnocentrism is rooted from historical origin. For myself as a South Korean, I personally believe that I belong to minimization stage at this point because I think cultural differences are superficial and people can share norms and values when they are willing to do so. I think I can move on to acceptance and adaptation stage if I become capable of digesting all other cultures without stereotyping. Oleksander from Ukraine, believes he is in the minimization stage, he knows that there always is a cultural difference and understands the concept, but not a strong eager to move on to any other stages and just happy with where he is right now.  

  POST №5 Cultural Misunderstanding/ Dilemma Last year, I studied here for a foundation year. It was a very multicultural class, where I met a lot of new friends with very different cultural backgrounds. The only guy, that was always trying to socialize with others, but had some problems with it, was a Chinese student, from another class, that had never experienced intercultural communication before.   We thought that it would be a great idea, to help him to adapt faster. We decided to be friendly with him by giving him some sweets sometimes or inviting him for drinks.   The hall models For my particular country which is Italy I feel like there is a lot of speculation and sometimes prejudice for weather Italian are really as the rest of the world describes them. Using the hall model, we as a group, were able to conclude that Italians in general are a high context culture as their physical context of the messages often carries a great deal of importance. Some aspect reported on the model such as space ad time are very accurate as they describe perfectly how our different cultures behave and how our day-to-day approaches and manners with other people are. In Italy for example we tend to be very friendly and chill whether in other country the phase of “breaking the ice” into the process of building friendship can take more time as other cultures might feel uncomfortable in opening up straight away.   So basically, we met in front of Binnenhof a public office with a long history and there was food truck festival going on around that area. We could have met somewhere else like indoor pub and bar but I ran into this place first and I thought this wasn’t a day to miss all lively atmosphere of the city and told other group members to meet up at this place.   The place literally fit ICC in cultural terms with lots of food truck from all different cultures. We had lovely beers and Armenian BBQ along with Japanese pancake and shared each other’s culture. I asked the guys how to say “cheers” in each other’s languages.
